Story about Davy Warwick

Songwriter who penned 9-11 tribute dies Monday

By JACK STALLARD

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Like many Americans, Davy Warwick was moved to tears when planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

Warwick, a late-budding songwriter who was 75 when the terrorists attacks happened, sat down and put his thoughts to words. His song "Angels Wings to Fly" wound up in the Library of Congress — one of 278 pieces chosen to be exhibited by the library relating to the events surrounding 911.

"He wasn't a veteran. He was an American," Toni Gebhardt said of her grandfather, who died Monday at the age of 80 — five years to the day after the attacks.

"He was really moved by the tragedy and that so many lives were lost. He was moved, and he wanted to memorialize it in some way. He was a ceramic mold maker, and he used to drive the roads a lot listening to music. He always said he could write a song, and he did."

Poems, songs, artworks and music poured in during the days and months after the attacks. From those tens of thousands of items, the Library of Congress selected less than 300 to be exhibited. Warwick, in a story published by the Longview News-Journal in 2002, said, "It took me 76 years to make my mark on this world, but I have done it now. This is something that does not happen every day."

Warwick's wife died in January, and while he and family members waited in the emergency room at a local hospital, he fell ill.

"They found a mass on his lung that day, and we found out he had terminal lung cancer," Gebhardt said. "We were hit double hard that day."

Warwick died at his residence in Overton.

"We kind of thought it was ironic but a little bit fitting," his daughter, Patricia Hill, said.

Hill said her father simply felt he needed to do something to memorialize those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

"The song was mostly dedicated to the firemen and the policemen who went into those buildings and knew they were risking their lives," Hill said. "He dedicated it to them. It was mostly about them, as well as just the terrible feeling people had watching this."

The song flowed from Warwick's heart to his pen quickly.

"I remember the (writing) process," she said. "It came to him quickly. He just felt it. He didn't start his song-writing career until he was in his 70s, and he was really heavy into it at that time. When he watched the news that day, he had a vision, sat down and wrote about it. He felt it deeply, and he said he cried while writing it."

Update

Tis Sunday September 10, 2006.

My car is in the shop with a broken motor mount, water pump, both radiator hoses, and a heater hose.

I carried the Marvell Mustangs to Earle Friday night but we lost. Earle scored many times but we only scored once. While there some service had free hotdogs, chips, cookies, bottled water. I cut half into my pinkie finger with my pocket knife after opening a tough packet of mustard.

I had a huge infection on my left side under my arm that finally broke. Pus shot out like a water hose all over the wall. I'm glad it broke I was getting worried. I have some antibiotics but I think I need a different kind.

I got my first check from Alternatives last week. $11oo ish for 3 weeks work.

Mom is doing well.

Cell Phone vs. Bible

What would happen if you treated your Bible like you treat your
cell phone?

What if you carried it around in your purse or pocket?
What if you turned back to go get it if you forgot it?
What if you flipped through it several times a day?
What if you used it to receive messages from the text?
What if you treated it like you couldn't live without it?
What if you gave it to your kids as gifts?
What if you used it as you traveled?
What if you used it in case of an emergency?
What if you bought a new one because the old one was worn out and tattered?

Do you know where your Bible is right now?

Unlike your cell phone, you don't ever have to
worry about your Bible being disconnected, because Jesus already paid your
bill.

My dogs are soooo silly. I've seen them out in the field chasing butterflies, chasing the mail man, chasing the water man, chasing each other. I've seen Sasha playing with ants and flies.

silly boy

Lil boy and Lil gurl. The one standing is the boy. He is sooooo sensitive. Like me I guess. He has great empathetic eyes and manner. The one laying down just wants to eat.

This is how my day went Monday. Had a flat, had to replace two front tires. Glad I had some spare money. I have no idea how this tire got so warped.

My two bushes are flowering in the yard. A cousin stopped by and asked if I wanted to put Roundup on the weeds to kill them. I said no. I like my flowers.

I went to the casino last night. The Isle of Capri in Lula Mississippi. I started playing 3-6 Texas Hold-em all night. I doubled my money to $200 and took a break to eat. They had a very good seafood buffet. There was a moderately long line so I asked a single older lady in front of me if she'd like to sit together. She did and we conversated. She was from my hometown but was living/working in Little Rock. She had drove down to look after her elderly aunt. She was a dainty eater to have forked over $20. She left and I had just finished one plate of catfish, rice with gumbo, water, baked new potatoes so when my waitress came over I offered the seat for someone else to eat. I went and got some crablegs with butter and shrimp and had just cracked one that exploded all over me when a young gentleman came over to sit. He went and got his crablegs and we sat and ate with occasionally conversation to a side table with an elderly couple. We both play online poker. He was from Miami but living in Little Rock. His nick is notmyproblem at pokerroom.com. I finished my shrimp and crablegs and went back with the $80 I had won. I got sleepy and made bad calls and ended up losing it back. I Ieft a little after 12 am having had fun and a free meal.

I gave all three of them a bath today... they were as skittish of the cold water as I was.

My big girl... I call her Sasha.

I havent named it yet.. she's one of two girls I have... I called her Little Girl.

Things I have learned living in ARKANSAS

1. Possums sleep in the middle of the road with their feet in the air

2. There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 live in ARKANSAS.

3. There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in ARKANSAS plus a couple no one's seen before.

4. If it grows, it sticks; if it crawls, it bites.

5. Onced and twiced are words.

9. Fixinto is one word.

10. There is no such thing as "lunch". There is only dinner and then there is supper.

11. Ice tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you're two. We do like a little tea with our sugar!

12. Backards and forwards means "I know everything about you."

13. Jeet? is actually a phrase meaning "Did you eat?"

14. You don't have to wear a watch because it doesn't matter what time it is. You work until you' re done or it's too dark to see.

YOU KNOW YOUR FROM ARKANSAS IF:

1. You measure distance in minutes.

6. You know what a "DAWG" is.

7. You carry jumper cables in your car...for your OWN car.

8. You only own four spices: salt, pepper, Tabasco and ketchup.

9. The local papers cover national and international news on one page but require 6 pages for local gossip and sports.

10. You think that the first day of deer season is a national holiday.

11. You find 100 degrees Fahrenheit "a little warm".

12. You know all four seasons: Almost Summer, Summer, still Summer and Christmas.

13. You know whether another ARKIE is from , north or south as soon as they open their mouth.

14. Going to Wal-mart is a favorite past time known as "goin' Wal-martin" or "off to Wally World".

15. You describe the first cool snap (below 70 degrees) as good pinto-bean weather.

16. A carbonated soft drink isn't a soda, cola or pop..it's a Coke, regardless of brand or flavor. Example: "What kinda coke you want?"

17. Fried catfish is the other white meat.

18. We don't need no stinking driver's ed....if our mama says we can drive, we can drive.

I went to mom's apartment today. I had bought a ham yesterday to cook for Memorial Day. I cooked her some and tried to plan a little for tomorrow (Memorial Day). I wanted to get one of the little oblong hams to cook with some brown sugar and pineapple but because they were so expensive ended up getting a bone-in shank ham. We slice pieces off and pan fry it. I thought about making some chicken and dressing tomorrow but with the heat so bad I may not. Our school season ends Thursday but we are having summer school so expenses won't be soo bad for the summer. After I left mom's I went fishing. I caught only a single bluegill... not enough for a meal so I let it go back. Now I'm playing Materia Magica, watching Gladiator, frying some pork chops, drinking some water, and setting under a fan trying to keep cool.

And lastly some nice pink flowers growing in the foreground of an old house that was the beginning of this lot.

The side view from my yard. The flowers are very small white flowers that are growing hither and yon.

Some nice orange flowers near my mailbox. You can see how high my grass is.

The nice cactus in my yard is blooming. I havent mowed the grass around it because I was thinking of setting up an electric fence and getting a couple of goats and maybe a calf.

I hadnt been out in a while so I treated myself to dinner and a movie last night. I went to the Ameca mexican restaurant in Forrest City, Arkansas and the food was sooooo good. I had the Poblanos with the customary chip and dip and some added cheese dip. Poblanos was two huge peppers stuffed with cheese and fried served with refried beans topped with drizzled cheese and rice. The food opened my sinus's but that is what it is supposed to do. I had fruit punch as a drink. I highly recommend Ameca. After the food I went over to the Broadway Cinema to see X-men 3 (http://www.x-menthelaststand.com/). The movie was enjoyable and had some surprises in it. I was disappointed with the Phoenix. For someone who could do anything she didn't do very much at all and I wished they had scripted her better.
I went over to the casino (http://www.tunica-ms.com/isle_of_capri_lula.htm) to play some poker. I won $140 which bought my lil lawnmower and some gas and oil.
It's been a while since I logged in so here goes. It's the end of May and it's hot. The school year is ending next week with summer school starting around the 6-7th. Mom is doing well. I'm working for her 2 hours a day through Independent Choices but may switch to Alternatives if we can get it approved. Then I can do up to 8 hours a day at $8 an hour. My lil trailer is doing well. My toilet is stopped up at the moment... so gross. The yard is partly mowed and I finally got the water leak fixed and got a screen door to keep out the flies. My cactus is blooming as well as some other flowers in the yard which I need to post some pics of as well as my dogs. I'm intending to set up an electric fence and putting a couple goats and a calf on this grass. I also want to get some rabbits, quail, chickens, maybe a turkey and pair of ducks. I've been batting around setting up a pig sty in the back corner in my mind. Seems weird to be wanting a country life when all around me is modern technology. I don't know what to say. I like it in the country.

Grandma has been in the hospital several times recently as she isn't getting enough oxygen in her blood and her blood pressure has been acting up I think. Mom is put off because no one who made the decision to put Grandma in the nursing home talked with her. Mom hates the idea of seeing Grandma being put in a home and I guess I do as well.

I got news from mom last week that my aunt and uncles have decided to put my Grandmother in a nursing home either beginning in February or March.

I woke up sad this morning. I was thinking of a little puppy I had picked up a couple of weeks ago. I was headed to my trailer near dark and a little puppy was running down the road in front of my car. I stopped and picked it up and it was so gross. It had scabs everywhere, pus in its eyes, sores on it nose, it was so skinny it's fur was in wrinkles on it's head. I had bought some chicken and fries from the store for supper but felt bad for the pup so I gave most of it to him. He finished eating and then climbed on the seat by me and then nuzzled up under my arm seeking attention. He was so nasty that I wanted to push him away but he was so pathetic that I wanted to hold him. I didn't push him away or hold him. I remained neutral I guess. We arrived at my home and I got him some water which he drank thirstily. I went inside and eventually he climbed inside and then found some clothes I had left on the floor and he promptly laid on them. I say he but I'm not sure if it was a boy or girl. I never looked. I couldn't stay as it was the holiday and I was just checking on my trailer. As I left the pup began wondering around the yard moaning. Unfortunately I didn't have the gas or money to go back for a few days to check on him. I was staying with mom and she could not have pets in or around her apartment. There is no animal shelter nearby. When I did go back I found him. He was curled up under a table in my yard dead. This made me so sad. I still think of it. I think it would make a good painting if I can remember the details of him being curled up.
