I rushed out of the house knocking stone left and right with my shoulders as I hit the door. I had hoped the farmer wouldnt come in from the fields so soon because I was extremely hungry. Fortunately the farmer was more scared than I and only had a pitchfork to wield. All in all a pitchfork still makes for a handy weapon to poke little holes in a brisket or a backside so I left with much haste.
I made a furlong at full speed casting several looks behind me to see if the farmer was in pursuit. I dodged into the bushes and found a game trail along a watercourse that led in the general direction I was fleeing in.
I was angry with myself. I had accomplished what I set out to do but had been spotted and most villages wont permit a huge ogre like myself to hang around and steal the occasional lamb or piglet. Luckily this farmer was far enough away from town that he wouldnt easily get others to leave their work and pursue me for any length of time.
I caught my breath and ambled towards the camp I hoped was still secret and safe. Natalie will be angry with me getting caught and will give me a tongue-lashing. Robert will probably laugh at me and make me feel even worse.
I rounded the cliff face and then climbed the twenty feet or so to the cave that was our shelter.
Natalie immediately knew that something was wrong when I dropped my knapsack by the fire. Scowling she opened the bag and surveyed what my wandering had brought back for our stomachs. There was a ham, a couple of hares, several potatoes, carrots, and cabbage.
Natalies scowl cleared a little but I could tell she was still angry. Kodu, what happened? she asked.
I had a run in with the local farmer, I replied sheepishly.
Your stomach is going to be the dead of you and will get us caught someday, Natalie replied irately.
Natalie, please dont hassle me. I know I made a mistake. I went to the hen house to catch a chicken or get an egg and then saw that the place was empty. The food was laying out in the open in the kitchen and I grabbed it, I answered.
Where is Robert? I asked.
Hunting again, Natalie answered shortly.
Im going to go fill up the water buckets and chop some fire wood, I said. Besides Im going to have to keep a lookout for that farmer. He must be pretty mad to find his prime pork and vegetables missing and a huge ogre making a wider opening for his door.
I grabbed the buckets and headed for the stream nearby to get water as well as to let Natalie calm down again. It seems that I make her more and more mad as the weeks go by.
